چکیده

This manuscript has been reproduced from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. Higher quality 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge. Contact UMI directly to order.

Optimal Low-Thrust, Invariant Manifold Trajectories via Attainable Sets

A method to incorporate low-thrust propulsion into the invariant manifolds technique is presented in this paper. The low-thrust propulsion is introduced by means of special attainable sets that are used in conjunction with invariant manifolds to define a first guess solution. This is later optimized in a more refined model where an optimal control formalism is used. Planar low-energy, low-thrus...

Low Thrust Sub-Optimal Transfer Trajectories to the Moon

In the present research the problem of transferring a spacecraft from the Earth to the Moon with minimum fuel consumption is considered. The Two-Body model is assumed to be a valid mathematical representation for the dynamics during the transfer. The spacecraft starts in a Low Earth Orbit and then goes to a Polar Orbit around the Moon. In previous publications, impulsive and optimal low thrust ...

Efficient Invariant-Manifold, Low-Thrust Planar Trajectories to the Moon ?

Two-impulse trajectories as well as mixed invariant-manifold and low-thrust efficient transfers to the Moon are discussed. Exterior trajectories executing ballistic lunar capture are formalized through the definition of special attainable sets. The coupled restricted threebody problems approximation is used to design appropriate first guesses for the subsequent optimization. The introduction of...

Using Direct Transcription to Compute Optimal Low Thrust Transfers Between Libration Point Orbits

The direct transcription method has been used to solve many challenging optimal control problems. One such example involves the calculation of a low thrust orbit transfer between libration point orbits. The recent implementation of high order discretization techniques is first described and then illustrated by computing optimal low thrust trajectories between orbits about the L1 and L2 Earth-Mo...

Low-Thrust Trajectories to the Moon

In this paper the problem of sending a spacecraft from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to the Moon with minimum fuel consumption is considered. It is assumed that the "Two-Body model" approximation is valid in all phases of the mission and that the final orbit around the Moon is polar. The first part deals with impulsive maneuvers, and obtain a set of values for fuel expenditure and trip time for several...

Low-Thrust Optimal Orbit Raising with Plane Change

A new guidance scheme for the problem of Low-thrust transfer between inclined orbits is developed within the framework of optimal control theory. The objective of the guidance scheme is to provide the appropriate thrust steering program that will transfer the vehicle from an inclined low earth orbits to the high earth orbits. The presented guidance scheme is determined using Pontryagin’s princi...
